Atlantis and the Moon-Hoax
In my work on the editorial board of a German aerospace magazine, I
occasionally come into contact with supporters of conspiracy theories.
In lectures about the Apollo program, at the latest, the third question
from the audience is aimed at the moon conspiracy.
I try to take every questioner seriously. Anyone who asks a serious
question deserves a serious answer.
Moon-Hoax
During my last vacation on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, I was
reminded of such conspiracy theories. For various reasons I believe
that there is a nucleus of truth to the myth of the island of Atlantis
sunken in the Atlantic. So I know that feeling when other people look at
you with pity. Many believe the Canary Islands are the remnants of
Atlantis - maybe. In any case, it is a funny coincidence that my wife
and I always stay here at the hotel “Atlantis”.
While walking on the beach promenade I noticed something that
seemed familiar to me. In the low sun the shadows of lanterns and
trees did not run parallel, instead they formed an angle.
This is exactly the main argument of believers in the moon conspiracy
when the shadows do not run parallel in Apollo photos. This is their
proof of the fake! Probably none of the moon conspirators has gone for
a walk in the evening - the shadows angles are so obvious!
Flat Earth
It is similar with the flat earthers. These are particularly intrusive in
discussions. "Gravity doesn't exist - only the flat earth moves
upwards". I always recommend to do an easy experiment: Take two
fist-sized stones and drop one into soft sand from a low height and
then throw the second one into the sand next to it with speed. The
resulting imprints are of different depths. A higher speed therefore
creates a deeper imprint.
Then they should hold a rock at knee height, one as high as
possible, and drop both at the same time. Both imprints will be of
slightly different depths. Then the flat earth would have to have moved
up faster for one stone than for the other stone - this is not possible.
Only once did someone write to me about the result of this
experiment: yes, there are two different imprints. He can't figure it out,
but the flat earth theory just has to be right...
ChemTrails
The third aviation-related conspiracy theory is that of chemtrails. Some
people think airliner vapor trails are chemicals sprayed to control their
minds. Either the CIA, the Russians or aliens are responsible.
When an airplane with vapor trails flies over the believers, half of them
become tired and listless, the other half become hyperactive and
cannot sleep. If one carefully asks why this is so, the mood of the
discussion usually becomes aggressive.
It is not about facts
In my opinion, according to countless discussions: Conspiracy theories
are not about facts. No arguments and even the simplest do-it-yourself
experiments do not change the minds of conspiracy supporters.
It's all about personality - everyone needs something to engage in and
find like-minded people around - even if it is complete nonsense.

A walk in the evening mood at the promenade of the
beautiful island of Lanzarote
Who believes that such shadows have never been observed by a
believer in the moon conspiracy?
That is what FlatEarthers believe: The Earth is a disc with the sun, moon and stars
glued onto a crystal sphere. Hard to take in the 21st century…
Very funny: Some FlatEarthers were navigated to the location of my lecture using GPS.
Yes, I admit I believe in the myth of atlantis!
Two airliners with vapor trails passing west of Lanzarote over the open Atlantic.
They are presumably in the process of raining their chemicals down on fish and jellyfish to
affect their personality.
